Maghery Band drill their way to gold in Limerick

THE long trip to the Limerick International Band Competition proved to be worthwhile for Maghery when they picked up some top level silverware.

Having previously competed and won three youth titles, the band decided this year to go big and enter the senior categories.

The overall goal was to introduce younger members to the top flight but in doing so Maghery also picked up the award for ‘Best Drill’.

A spokesperson for the band said, “The members were thrilled to be recognised internationally for their performance.

“We normally perform routines that are anywhere between ten minutes and 15 minutes to showcase our abilities. The three minute timeframe at Limerick was a difficult task as we wanted to include as much as possible for the international judges.”

Of the 19 marching bands who competed this year, five were from the United States. The 14 others were from Canada, Northern Ireland, Donegal, Dublin, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary and Westmeath.

The overall winners were The Pride of Bixby Marching Band from Oklahoma which has over 200 members.

By contrast Maghery had just 23 members available to compete.

But size is of little concern when compared to camaraderie and inclusion, said the spokesperson.

“The competition between all bands, no matter the size, is welcomed and everyone is so appreciative of everyone else’s talent. No matter the scale of your band, you feel so embraced.

“The competition overall is such a positive experience. The atmosphere is so incredible between the competing bands as everyone enjoys and appreciates each other’s talents and varying differences.

“The spectators who line the streets also make the experience incredible as they support all the bands along the way. It’s great to hear them spurring on

Donegal when they see where your band is from and cheering as they enjoy your performance attributes.”

On winning Best Drill, Maghery said they were delighted to be recognised with a top award.

“We work extremely hard to create an entertaining performance and use our drill to enhance our musical performances. To be up against bands with hundreds of members and to receive any title is such a great honour. But to be specifically selected for Best Drill is extra special.

“Limerick is a competition that we thoroughly enjoy attending. We now look forward to performing at Mullingar for Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann where we will defend our title in August.”
