Love over hate at Christmas

by Louise Doyle

THE power of love is proving greater than any message of hate as ‘one love’ signs now appear alongside previously spray painted anti-Ukraine graffiti at various locations in Letterkenny.

There was huge upset and disgust after black spray painted graffiti appeared on walls around the town displaying offensive phrases as well as the ‘Z’ symbol, which has become a Russian symbol of war since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine almost a year ago, in February.

Z symbols – which are marked on Russian Armed Forces vehicles involved in the war with Ukraine – were painted on walls at Ballymacool Park, close to Loreto Secondary School and on the gateway of a house across from Aldi.

There were others in the area of St Eunan’s Cathedral.

The incidents sparked fear and tension locally. Letterkenny-based councillor Jimmy Kavanagh previously spoke out condemning the spray painting incidents, which he had said was causing “tension and fear”.

Cllr Kavanagh was prompted to bring a motion to a meeting of Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District in November of last year, asking that a policy be implemented to deal with the issue.

But now, the offensive graffiti very much slips from eyesight as messages of ‘one love’ spray painted in red now feature alongside them.
