A PROTEST march will take place in Letterkenny this weekend calling for an immediate halt to the genocidal slaughter of Palestinians in Gaza and the Occupied Territories of Palestine.
The Donegal Branch of the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign (DIPSC) have invited the county’s TDs and councillors to join them on Saturday, March 29 at 12 noon for a protest march and rally calling for an immediate halt to the genocidal slaughter of Palestinians in Gaza and the Occupied Territories of Palestine.
The march will leave the car park opposite the Accident and Emergency of Letterkenny University Hospital on the St Conal’s side of the road and proceed via the Oatfield Roundabout to An Grianán Theatre for a rally.
On November 25 last, Donegal County Council unanimously passed a motion calling on the Government to pass the Occupied Territories Bill.
This was a clear statement by the Council, on behalf of the people of Donegal, that the apartheid system and illegal occupation by Israel must end.
In July 2024 the International Court of Justice advised the United Nations that Israel is responsible for racial segregation and apartheid against the Palestinians and laid out a long list of abuses and violations of international law by Israeli authorities.
It found that Israel’s occupation is illegal and set out clear standards for Israel to provide reparations to Palestinians.
The ruling places an obligation on all states, including Ireland and the EU, not to support of facilitate Israel’s occupation, it’s operation of an apartheid state and acts of genocide.
It also obliges all states to take actions to prevent these crimes occurring.
During her recent visit to Ireland Fancesca Albenese, the UN Special Rapporteur on Occupied Palestinian Territories, stated that Ireland does not need to wait for the Occupied Territories Bill to be passed before it acts.
She stated that Ireland has “an obligation not to have its companies or banks or pension funds or any financial institutions involved, or universities involved, with Israel”.
The DIPSC have requested that local public representatives publicly show their support for such concrete action by Ireland to bring about the end of apartheid and the genocidal slaughter of innocent children, women and men.
