Letterkenny’s new pop-up café for those recovering from addiction is a safe space

by Louise Doyle

A NEW pop up recovery café for those in recovery from alcohol and other drug addiction is providing a safe and comfortable space for people to meet and have a chat.

The ‘3C’s Café (coffee, courage and chat) is a new initiative of Alcohol Forum Ireland in Letterkenny.

The national charity works with people in recovery who have raised the lack of alcohol free social spaces in the evening as a challenge for many, particularly those navigating early recovery.

The pop up café is held in Chill Out Café, Lower Main Street, Letterkenny. The first event took place last month, with the pop up continuing once a month until Christmas.

Paula Leonard, CEO of Alcohol Forum Ireland, spoke of the importance those in recovery taking leadership.

“Over the past few months, we have been approached by number of people in recovery and this initiative is a result of conversations that began during the summer months. The ‘Three C’s Café will be a great way to make connections with others on a recovery pathway and we hope that it will help build recovery capital here in the county.”

There are plans to continue the pop up café in 2024.

“We are open to running similar events in other parts of the county but that will all depend on the energy and what interest there is as this movement grows. Many of the families that we work with have transformed their lives, particularly the lives of children where parental alcohol and other drug use has been a challenge to family life. Their courage in coming to our programmes and working through things takes a lot of courage.

“The café is just one more support here in the county for people at various stages of the recovery journey.”

While the Café is primarily for people in recovery and their family members, everyone is welcome to come along.
