Kilmacrennan traffic ‘past a joke’

CALLING for urgent traffic calming measures in Kilmacrennan, Cllr John O’Donnell said he would not sit at another council meeting until something was done about it.

Cllr Donal Mandy Kelly described traffic in the village as being almost “a case of bless yourself and close your eyes as it was a death trap”.

At Tuesday’s Letterkenny Milford MD had put forward a motion that the council contact Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) immediately to get a time frame of when the traffic calming measures would be in the town.

“There has been another accident since I wrote today’s motion and I get the same answers all the time. There is not a member here who would not put their name to a petition on this. Some of my constituents more or less blame me and I do understand their frustration. They have been on to me for this last nine years and others before me.

“It has gone beyond a joke. We cannot sit back until someone is seriously injured or worse. The volume of traffic and the junction is not working,” he added.

Cllr Ciaran Brogan seconded the motion saying the issue has been going on “for years and years”.

“This problem has been talked about before any of us were on this council,” he added.

In response the council executive stated “The Road Safety Engineer has carried out an investigation of the location and the Design of a

Signing and Lining enhancement scheme will be completed this week and the works programme will be carried out as soon as is possible.

“Consultation continues with the TII regarding the development of a further scheme. In addition proposals for creating a Go Safe Location in this area are being examined”.
