President Michael D Higgins praises Eileen Magnier

PRESIDENT Michael D Higgins has paid tribute to RTÉ’s North West correspondent, Eileen Magnier.

Ms Magnier has retired after 39 years with the station.

She joined RTÉ in 1985 and was appointed as regional correspondent in July 1990, becoming the organisation’s first female correspondent.

She reported from Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim and beyond, across all of RTÉ’s flagship news programmes on television, radio and on digital platforms, during her career.

President Higgins said Ms Magnier made history by becoming the first female correspondent with the broadcaster, a role he said she “fulfilled with commitment and professionalism”.

He said Ms Magnier’s reporting from the Cresslough tragedy “demonstrated the best of public broadcasting”.
