EXCITEMENT is mounting in the seaside town ahead of the third annual Bundoran Lifeboat Soapbox Race which will be hosted by the local volunteer crew of the RNLI this Sunday with activities getting underway from midday.

Now in its third year, the event is firmly established on the June Bank Holiday Sunday and the annual calendar of events as participants come from all over Ireland to take part in both the soapbox race and skate jam which immediately preceeds the soapbox race.

The event this year will take the same format as last year with the longboard competition kicking off around midday which sees longboard skaters from the local area and many from Dublin and Northern Ireland descend on the town to compete in one of the only organised events of its type in the country.

The hunger will then be on the locals then to ensure the Soapbox perpetual cup remains south of the border this year as last year’s overall winners came from Dungannon in County Tyrone. The soapbox race kicks off at 2pm. All registration details are on the website for the event www.bundoranlifeboatsoapboxrace.com where online registration is also available.

Finally, one of the most colourful aspects of the day will be the ball race. Balls will be sold for €5 on the day, then dumped out of a cherry picker, with the owner of the first ball through the funnel at the bottom of the hill winning €1000.

Speaking about the event, Soapbox Race director Cormac McGurren said ‘this will be a fun day for all the family – they’ll get to see some great longboarding, great soapbox racing and maybe win €1000 at the end of the day too! It’s a free event for all to attend and we’re hoping for a big turnout on Sunday!’

All monies raised on the day will go to assist the lifesaving activities of the Bundoran RNLI Lifeboat crew.
