JASON Quigley doesn’t want to settle for second or third best at the World Championships.
Ahead of his semi-final bout with Russian Artem Chebotarev tomorrow morning, Quigley is feeling relaxed and confident. He has already won a bronze medal, but the winner in Quigley is just itching to get a crack at the top prize in Kazakhstan.
“I never settle for second best or third best,” said the Finn Valley ABC man.
“I don’t really like doing that so that’s the great thing I have in me, to go the whole way. That’s what I plan on doing.”
Quigley goes in the middleweight semi-final against Chebotarev, while Joe Ward fights in a light heavyweight semi-final later in the day against Peraza of Cuba in the afternoon.
Quigley said: “I’m feeling in great form. It’s a great achievement to get this far as it is. The two of us have our heads focussed and ready to go even further now.
“Of course I’m over the moon and delighted that I’ve got this far and to clinch a medal. Myself and Joe have joined a short list of Irish boxers with bronze medals, but the two of us know that no-one has gone a step further and it’s a great booster to be in that position.”
Quigley’s quarter-final win over Zoltan Harcsa has extended his fine unbeaten run to 31 fights.
The 22-year old from Balllybofey won’t let that trouble him tomorrow. He said: “I never thought of the record, but now that it’s in the thirties I want to keep it going. I won’t let it play in my head. I’ll still go in there fully focussed because I have to conentrate on what has got me here already.
“I can’t be going in there focussing on the record; I’ll go in there to do what has won me the other 31 fights and hopefully it’ll be 32.”
