‘Hopefully we can weather the storm’

DR Paul Tourish from Moneyhaughley, Manorcunningham lives outside Warrington, Cheshire in North West England with his wife Tracey and two cats. He is a retired Consultant Psychiatrist with the NHS.

Earlier this week, the Department of Health reported that the number of Covid-19 infections rose by 665 in a day to 5,683 in England.

“Tracey and I have been out a couple of times in the past week for essentials and a hospital appointment but it’s as eerily quiet here as elsewhere given we’re in the midst of a pandemic. The UK government seem to be slightly behind elsewhere in closing businesses down and there are a significant number of idiots still congregating despite social distancing advice, as in other countries. I imagine more draconian measures are a short time away to try to curb this,” he said.

So far Dr Tourish hasn’t returned to work but he thinks that may change soon and he’s ready for whatever is around the corner.

“I’m hopeful that, like China which is now having zero new cases, we can weather the next two months in particular and see this out but there’s only so much a government and a health service can do. The rest is up to people informing themselves and taking personal responsibility in this crisis.

“I have an old friend Ged, he’s been like my surrogate dad over here and I’ve known him 30 years. He’s 82 years old and has not been able to drive for some months due to eye problems. He is due for cataract removal later this week and we will take him if the procedure is going ahead.

“We have been doing his shopping with our own. His wife passed away about two years ago and he has had a third of a lung removed due to cancer a year before that. He jokes a lot about how he’s been self-isolating for years! Luckily, like me, he is easily pleased with a good book or a decent movie or series and doesn’t get bored easily,” Dr Tourish said.
