Hip hop artist Brodie wants to know your story

Letterkenny musician Brodie Enfield.

LETTERKENNY’S Brodie Enfield is not your typical hip hop artist.

Rather than songs about cribs, cars and clothes, he has a very simple message for young people – if you are feeling the pressure, then you are not alone.

The 21-year-old’s latest single, What is Your Story, follows a young schoolboy – played by local actor Kai McHugh – who uses his talents as a dancer to escape the problems he is experiencing at home.

One day a passer-by spots him dancing alone in an underground car park and manages to capture him on film.

She uploads the video to the internet and it immediately goes viral, racking up thousands of hits.

His heavy drinking mother stumbles upon it and, in a moment of clarity, realises what she has been putting her boy through.

The story in itself is straightforward – if you are feeling down, talk to someone.

“Tell me your story, you don’t have to be lonely,” is how Brodie Enfield puts it in his unique musical style.

His obvious vocal talents tied together with top notch acting performances from McHugh and Burtonport’s Kate Gallagher and a beautifully shot video by local company Re-Act lift it all to a whole new musical level.

Shaun Doogan and Ciaran McCann, the team behind Re-Act Productions with Highland Radio’s Gary Gamble.

With contemporary issues like online intimidation and social media bullying rarely far from the headlines these days, it is a message that everyone, whether young or old or teacher or pupil, should probably tune in to.

And it seems that they are as, since the release of the song and video, it has been listened to thousands of times.

Brodie said, “The whole point of the video is that every one has their own life and you don’t know what is happening behind closed doors.

“I have had my own rough patches and me and family have always had to stay strong. Music has always helped my when I have been dealing with things and I just hope people can listen to my music and see through to the message in it.”

Now aged 21, Brodie Enfield has been writing his own music since he was 13. But given Donegal’s very limited urban scene, it has not always been easy to find a home for it.

But Brodie and the team at Purple Gorilla are hoping to change that with one very decent tune at a time.

“There is no urban scene here and I am hoping to bring that new genre to Letterkenny. You have that scene in Dublin, Galway and places like that but here there is nothing. So me and the team at Purple Gorilla are hoping to get something happening.”

While in part an examination of society’s darker side, What is Your Story is also an uplifting, soulful and brave offering from the young star.

“Everything I write, I talk about what I know, what I see and I try to make people realise that we are all equal,” said Brodie.

“You can be poor, you can have millions in the bank but we all breathe the same air. I have lost friends to suicide, I have lost friends to cancer and I have lost friends to accidents. that you are not on your own and there is always a way through things. I want to reach out to people and show them that they are not alone.”
