by Kate Heaney

A GAOTH Dobhair law graduate has become the new face of TG4’s children’s news programme which brings Irish language news into primary school classrooms and includes the pupils in news broadcasts.

Presenter Joseph Mac Aoidh started with Nuacht Cúla4 two weeks ago and is loving it.

Speaking to the Donegal News this week Joseph, who is a law graduate from Queen’s University Belfast, explained that having studied law, it is a great foundation for journalism.

“This opportunity came up on TG4 last year to work with RTÉ as an intern. Then I worked with RnaG in the autumn.

“On Nuacht Cúla4 we cover national and local stories which inform children about what is happening in Ireland and in Gaeltacht areas. We also go out to schools and cover their events. It is fantastic to have this and a great asset for children to learn Irish. Teachers put the programme on in the classrooms. When I grew up in the Gaoth Dobhair Gaeltacht we didn’t have anything like this,” 23-year-old Joseph said.

He is a former pupil of Scoil Adhamhnáin Naofa and Pobalscoil Ghaoth Dobhair secondary school before going to Queen’s.

He is a keen sports fan and plays soccer with Gaoth Dobhair Celtic. He also plays GAA with Gaoth Dobhair.

What he loves most about Donegal is the beautiful scenery and enjoys running and walking on his local beautiful beaches.

He has a keen interest in reading about history and politics and listening to traditional music.

Joseph’s parents Ann and Joe are delighted at his new post with TG4. Joe is from Gaoth Dobhair and Ann is from Portnoo.

Nuacht Cúla4 is produced by Fíbín Media who are located next door to TG4 in County Galway.

Schools can tune in to watch Nuacht Cúla4 live and also keep up to date with the news of the day online from their classrooms or on catchup on the Cúla4 player at cula4.com.

The dedicated Irish language channel for children Cúla4 was launched last September by Minister Catherine Martin and airs for 14 hours a day from 6am every morning until 8pm every evening.

It is available on Saorview – Channel 18, Channel 602 on Virgin Media, Sky 624 and Eir will all carry the young people’s channel, and online via the Cúla4 and TG4 Player cula4.com and the Cúla4 App.
