Fundraiser to rebuild St Mary’s Church raises over €36,000 in less than 24 hours

A fundraiser to support the rebuilding of St Mary’s Church in Derrybeg has raised over €36,000 in less than 24 hours.

In the early hours of Easter Monday, a fire completely destroyed the church.

Fire crews were alerted to the fire in the middle of the night and crews from Gweedore, Dungloe, Falcarragh, Glenties and Letterkenny rushed to the scene.

The blaze burned through the roof as fire crews did their best.

However, as daylight began breaking through, only a shell of the building remained.

Now, the local community are rallying together to raise vital funds to rebuild the beloved church.

Mary Coyle, who organised the fundraiser on behalf of Coiste Forbartha Dhobair Cuideachta Faoi Theorainn Ráthaíochta, said the parish of Gaoth Dobhair is in mourning.

“This is a deeply tragic event that strikes at the heart of our community,” she said.

“Our beautiful Church was not only a place of worship, but also a centre of light, life and love, of support, unity and hope for many.

“We are a resilient community and will stand together to support one another in this moment of deep grief and sorrow.

“We are asking for your help to rebuild our church with a renewed hope for a brighter future.

“Any support big or small is greatly appreciated.”
