Fundraiser for island’s graveyard extension gains momentum

A CAMPAIGN fundraiser for an extension to Arranmore Island’s graveyard is gaining significant momentum, with almost €11,000 raised.

Donegal County Council granted planning permission for the development last month. Fr John Boyce, on behalf of the parish of Arranmore, lodged plans with the local authority in November of last year for an extension to the existing graveyard in Cloghcor and Gortgarra.

The proposed development also comprised access roads, footpaths, light poles and an area for a Columbarium for the storage of funeral urns.

A new car park, site works to provide for the development of an access road and car parking spaces to the west of the proposed graveyard in the future, and all associated site development were also contained in outlined plans.

Donegal County Council gave the go-ahead to the development last month, subject to five conditions.

A major fundraising drive headed-up by the local community has been ongoing since late last year.
