AS PART of ‘Culture Night, the County Donegal Heritage Office will be hosting a built heritage walk along Church Lane in Letterkenny on Friday with Colm Murray, Architecture Officer with The Heritage Council.
The meeting point is at St. Eunan’s Cathedral at 7:30 p.m.
Church Lane permitted one writer to describe Letterkenny as having the image of a ‘City of God’. How much heritage does a short, steep stretch of an Irish town contain? Perhaps more than you think.
As part of ‘Culture Night’, Colm Murray, a native of Letterkenny, will give a short tour of Church Lane pointing out some overlooked features of architecture, historical geography, townscape and the plight of small houses in Ireland in the early 21st century.
Before joining The Heritage Council, Mr Murray worked with the National Monuments Section of the Office of Public Works on the conservation of sites in state care.
He also worked as an architectural heritage advisor with Duchas, the Heritage Service, and undertook surveys of Letterkenny and an interim survey of County Donegal for the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage.
The built heritage walk along Church Lane will start at 7:30 p.m. and will be finished by 8:15 pm, leaving participants free to enjoy the numerous other events taking place in Letterkenny for ‘Culture Night.’
Other events include sculpture and art trails, exhibitions, dramatic performances, live music, film screenings, literary events, an illustrated presentation on the 1930s Schools’ Folklore Collection, a pop-up gallery, a children’s art room, workshops, and music, dance and recording open studios.
