In one case a business in Inishowen had a VAT number scammed and used to sell €50,000 worth of excavators into the Far East.
Within the last week gardai have been swamped with calls from businesses’ and individuals across Donegal who have fallen prey to frauds and have had thousands of euro stolen following various forms of information extraction.
Speaking to the Donegal News yesterday, Donegal Garda Crime Prevention Officer, Sergeant Paul Wallace, appealed to any businesses or individuals involved in online trading or purchases to be ‘highly vigilant’.
The criminals, in some cases are running their operations out of internet cafes in different countries all over the world.
