FIVE Donegal boxers, including three from the Twin Towns BC, will take to the canvas for the finals of the Ulster Novice Intermediate Championships on Friday night in the Dockworkers’ Club, Belfast.
The Twin Towns trio of Michael McMenamin, Barry Doherty and Kevin Maguire will aim to bring titles back in their respective finals, with Dunfanaghy’s Colm McFadden and Letterkenny’s Cillin Boyce also lining up.
In the light-welterweight final Letterkenny’s Boyce faces Twin Towns’ McMenamin. Boyle, who stopped Johnny Redpath in his quarter-final last Tuesday, had a walkover win over Christy Doherty (Oakleaf) in the semis on Thursday.
Boyce now meets McMenamin in the 64kgs decider. McMenamin followed up two demolitions over Darren McMahon and Padraig Beagan on Monday and Tuesday – both TKOs in round two – by overcoming Clonoe’s Eunan Morgan in the semi-final. McMenamin took a majority decision, 2-1, verdict from the judges.
At light-middleweight, Doherty won an all-Donegal semi-final against Dungloe’s David Tennyson (2-1) to set up a final against Stephen McCrory (Clonoe).
Maguire will meet Karl Haughey (Carrickmore) in the light-heavyweight final. Maguire had a walkover win from his semi against Ballyshannon’s Niall McGonigle. Haughey defeated Buncrana’s Sean Berryman 3-0 in his impressive semi, but Maguire will be gunning for glory come Friday’s final.
Dunfanaghy BC’s McFadden has shown good form. After a win over Twin Towns’ Cathal Gallagher on Tuesday, he overcame Carrickmore’s Colm Cummings in his semi-final.
McFadden was on top from start to finish and got the unanimous decision his display deserved. His prize is a final against Liam Nugent from the Mark Heagney ABC in Kildress, County Tyrone.
Raphoe’s Patrick Friel was beaten 2-1 by Aidan Thompson (Eastside) in the middleweight semi while Peter McGonigle from Ballyshannon lost out to Finbarr Kelly (North Down) in a cruiserweight semi.
