LONG-serving Fianna Fáil County Councillor David Alcorn will not contest the forthcoming local elections.
Cllr Alcorn, who has been a member of Donegal County Council since 1999, is a former chairman of the local authority and a former member of the Board of Údarás na Gaeltachta and a member of Donegal ETB.
He formally stood down last night with the local Cumann supporting Noreen McGarvey from Meenmore to contest the Glenties Elecoral Area selection convention later this month.
“I have been associated with Donegal County Council since 1970 as a public servant and since 1999 as an elected member. For personal reasons I feel that I am no longer able to serve the people as full time public representative, in particular as a county councillor.
“I wish to sincerely thank all those loyal constituents who have supported me in six different elections over the years and for that I am forever grateful.
“Special thanks to those who canvassed so diligently for me. It is very heartening that a number of young people have to date, expressed interest in seeking nomination to contest the party convention on Saturday 8th March.
“I am delighted that one of our own local cumann members Noreen McGarvey, Meenmore, Dungloe has been selected by our cumann to seek the Fianna Fail nomination at the forthcoming convention,” Cllr Alcorn said
Of the current 29 members, all but Cllr Alcorn are expected to contest the elections confirmed for Friday, May 23.
Political parties are busy holding selection conventions in the five different electoral areas of the county.
As part of radical local government reform, there will be 37 county councillors elected now to a ‘beefed up’ council while local authorities in Letterkenny, Buncrana, Bundoran and Ballyshannon will be abolished.
