Fanad United withdraw from the Ulster Senior League

FANAD United have confirmed that they are pulling out of the Ulster Senior League.

Fanad are the most successful club in the USL’s history, having won the league title 14 times.

However, they have not tasted glory since 2011, and have struggled for the best part of the last decade.

The club felt they were going to struggle to get a team together for the USL next season, and at a committee meeting on Wednesday made the difficult call to leave Intermediate football.

“We are pulling out of the league,” said a Fanad spokesperson.

“It is sad and it’s not a decision that we have taken lightly. We just feel it is the right choice for the club at this moment in time.

“We informed the league of our decision yesterday (Thursday) morning, and it is our intention to apply to join the Donegal Junior League.”

Fanad will be making a statement on the matter over the next day or two.

Fanad’s withdrawal poses fresh questions of the future of the Ulster Senior League as there are now only five teams in the league – Cockhill Celtic, Letterkenny Rovers, Bonagee United, Derry City Reserves, and Finn Harps Reserves.
