€700,000 for two walkway projects

TWO Donegal projects are set to receive €700,000 in funding as part of a government scheme to embrace the outdoors.

The funding has been allocated for the development of a walkway between Carrigart and Downings and the upgrade of the Moville shorewalk.

Welcoming the allocation, Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine and Donegal TD, Charlie McConalogue, said: “Outdoor recreation is so important to Donegal people and the investment announced today for Moville, Carrigart and Downings is important to those communities and will enhance the communities.”

Deputy Joe McHugh said he is delighted with the €500,000 allocation for the Carrigart to Downings Pathway.

“I would like to acknowledge Columba Boyce and Noel Mc Bride for campaigning for this project over the years,” he said.

“Special thanks to Údarás na Gaeltachta for co funding the EIS with Donegal County Council and I wish to acknowledge the Council engineers for their preparatory work in advance of the application. In particular I would like to thank Minister Heather Humphreys for taking time to visit Carrigart/ Downings on two occasions and for her support of this important project.

“The Parish of Mevagh continues to grow its services around tourism and this pathway will be a big asset in the area. With more walkers and runners on the road this will be a great help from a safety point of view.”

The funding is being delivered under Embracing Ireland’s Outdoors – an ambitious and transformational National Outdoor Recreation Strategy.

Embracing Ireland’s Outdoors was developed in partnership with Comhairle na Tuaithe and is a collaborative cross-Government strategy that reflects the views of stakeholders and the public. The new strategy will set the stage to strengthen and support the sustainable development of the outdoor recreation sector in Ireland for years to come bringing huge economic and health benefits to communities across the country.
