A CIVIC Reception is to be held to honour the work of Downings playwright Francie Cullen.
A motion was passed at this week’s meeting of Letterkenny Milford Municipal District to hold a Civic Reception in recognition of Francie Cullen’s work in promoting the Irish language and culture.
The motion was submitted by Cllr Donal Coyle who said Mr Cullen’s contribution to Donegal’s culture and the Irish language deserves to be widely recognised.
Cllr Coyle listed Mr Cullen’s achievements which span over two decades since 2003 when Mr Cullen wrote his first Irish drama for a local group ‘Aisteiri Mhiobhnaigh’ in the Rosguill Gaeltacht.
The group went on to have major success and won three awards at An Fhéile Náisiúnta under the direction of Mr Cullen.
Since then, he has written and directed 14 plays and has received many awards for his work. He is currently working on new dramas based on stories told by his mother which he aims to publish in the near future.
The motion was seconded by Cllr Michael McBride who said Mr Cullen has ‘done in 20 years what some people could not do in a lifetime.’
The Cathaoirleach of the Letterkenny Milford Municipal District, Cllr Donal ‘Mandy’ Kelly said he fully supported the motion and he would gladly provide a Mayor’s reception for the playwright.
Arrangements will now be made within the council to organise the event.
