Donegal welder to represent Ireland at prestigious WorldSkills competition in France

Lee Davison from Buncrana, Donegal, is gearing up to represent Ireland at the prestigious 2024 WorldSkills competition in Lyon, France.

Davison, who works for D&F Piping, will showcase his welding skills as part of Team Ireland, comprised of 18 young talents competing across various skill areas.

Reflecting on his achievement, he said:  “I am honoured to be part of the team representing Ireland in the welding category. Welding is my passion, and I am continually looking at ways to improve my welding skills.”

The WorldSkills event will feature over 1,500 competitors from 71 countries, with Team Ireland participating in categories such as Industrial Mechanics, Carpentry, and Cybersecurity.

Minister for Higher Education Patrick O’Donovan highlighted the importance of the competition, saying it: “showcases the range and diversity of skills careers and Apprenticeships available in Ireland.”

Davison is one of many skilled young people benefiting from these opportunities, having trained at Donegal ETB.

The competition, which Ireland first entered in 1957, is a major platform for skilled workers.

“Skills talent in Ireland has never been brighter,” said SOLAS CEO Andrew Brownlee, adding that the event helps apprentices and learners “unlock their potential.”

Davison’s success comes with support from sponsors Lincoln Electric and Metron Welding, as well as Donegal ETB.

He is ready to “fly the flag high for Ireland” and hopes to inspire others to follow in his footsteps.
