A DONEGAL road safety campaigner has welcomed the new road traffic bill which covers legislation she has been fighting for.

The legislation will see tougher penalty points for speeding, using a phone and not wearing a seat-belt – and gardaí will be able to conduct new roadside drug tests.

This has been welcomed by Ms Mary Clinton of Action Campaign for Education Against Road Tragedies (A-CEART) who has been a road safety campaigner since 2004.

“I’ve been campaigning for many of these laws for years and I am delighted to see them being introduced. Roadside drug tests is one issue, in particular, he campaigned for and discussed with Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Leo Varadkar TD.

“These are all issues I have been campaigning for since 2004/2005 and I have a house full of letters which I sent to the ministers, especially drug driving,” she said.
Ms Clinton also congratulated her fellow road safety campaigner, Susan Gray on PARC, on tougher penalty points being introduced in the new bill.

“Susan has done a lot of great work and penalty points was one matter she campaigned and lobbied heavily on.”
