Donegal named sixth highest in Ireland for tax refunds

By Paul McElwee

NEW research into average tax rebates in Ireland has revealed that Donegal ranks sixth highest throughout the country in terms of citizens getting money back.

The research, undertaken by Irish Tax Rebates, shows that Donegal residents received an average rate of €539.50 per person in 2023.

The top five sees Dublin residents receive an impressive €583.59, followed by Cavan with €561.22, Laois (€552.57), Roscommon (€544.42), and Mayo round out the top five with €541.41. The average rebate came out at €517.74. On the lower end of the scale are Wexford (€470.74) and Leitrim (€426.18) at the bottom.

The data highlights the economic disparity across the country, reflecting both diverse income levels and economic activities, aiming to shed light on tax returns in Ireland and provide expert insights on the implications of these figures.

Claire Murphy, Chartered Tax Advisor from Irish Tax Rebates, had this to say about the average rebates in Ireland for 2023.

“The significant differences in average tax rebates across counties in Ireland are indicative of underlying economic disparities. Dublin’s position at the top is not surprising, given its status as the economic hub of the country. High-income levels and diverse employment opportunities in Dublin contribute to higher tax returns and, consequently, higher rebates. However, no matter which county you live in, there could be a chance that you are missing out on hundreds of euros, especially due to missing medical expenses, rent tax credits, working from home and other tax credits.”

She urged people to be aware of tax reliefs and credits available to them ahead of Budget 2025 in Ocotber.

“With Budget 2025 coming on October 1st, people need to be aware of the tax reliefs and credits available to them, such as increased rate bands, another increase in the Rent Tax Credit and changes in the Gift/Inheritance threshold, which will be in the favour of the taxpayer. People all across the country could be due a rebate so I would advise people to go back and check all four years of the current tax window – you could be missing out on thousands.”
