DONEGAL County Council has received the highest number of applications for the Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant, according to figures released by the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, James Browne.
As of the end of March 2025, Donegal received 1,114 applications, of which 811 have been approved.
To date, €7,451,941 has been issued to Donegal applicants on completion of works.
Nationally, €112 million has been paid out to bring more than 2,000 homes back into use.
Commenting on the figures, Donegal Minister of State, Charlie McConalogue said the number of grants being paid out continues to significantly rise each quarter, as works on properties are completed.
“More than 630 grants were issued in in the first quarter of 2025 on completion of works, with 117 applications in Donegal approved during the first three months of this year,” he said.
“I’m delighted to see such a large uptake in the Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant in Donegal.
“It’s vital that everything is done to make sure properties in Donegal are brought into circulation and the Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant is certainly helping in this regard.”
The Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant provides funding to refurbish vacant and derelict homes.
Grants up to €50,000 are available to renovate a vacant property, while grants up to €70,000 are available if the property is derelict.
“The grant which was introduced in 2022 is making a significant and important contribution to our towns, villages and rural areas, supporting people to bring these vacant and derelict properties back into use,” the Minister of State with Special Responsibility for Sport and Postal Policy added.
“The more properties that come back into use, the more revitalised our communities become.”
