It was a very open first half, and while the Donegal defence struggled, goals from Odhran MacNiallais and Ryan McHugh helped Donegal into a 2-9 to 0-10 lead at half-time.

Monaghan were granted a wonderful opportunity to pull back their deficit when they were awarded a penalty just 15 seconds after the restart.

Jack McCarron was pulled down by Donegal goalkeeper Shaun Patton, but the Monaghan full-forward fired his spot-kick wide.

McBrearty and Jamie Brennan added goals to Donegal’s tally and Patton saved a late penalty, and Declan Bonner’s team will now face Armagh in the McKenna Cup semi-final on Wednesday night.
