Donegal awarded over €380,000 by Community Monuments Fund

SEVEN Donegal projects have been allocated funding of over €380,000 under this year’s Community Monuments Fund.

The core objective of the Community Monuments Fund is to support the conservation, maintenance, protection, and promotion of local monuments and historic sites, in alignment with the aims of the Government’s new heritage plan, Heritage Ireland 2030, and the Climate Change Sectoral Adaptation Plan.

This year’s fund represents an increase of 33% over last year’s allocation, with €384,535 being awarded to 7 projects in Donegal.

This year’s CMF awards include:

  • Funding of €103,341 under Stream 1 for Killaghtee Church and Graveyard
  • Funding of €99,705 under Stream 1 for Raymochy Church and Graveyard
  • Funding of €97,660 under Stream 1 for Doon Fort
  • Funding of €31,241 under Stream 1 for Kilbarron Church 
  • Funding of €27,236 under Stream 2 for St Nauls Church and Graveyard
  • Funding of €16,994 under Stream 3 for Malin Well Old Church
  • Funding of €8,357 under Stream 3 for Sraith na Cille, Dún Lúiche

Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine and Donegal T.D., Charlie McConalogue, today welcomed €384,532 in funding under the Community Monuments Fund for seven Donegal projects.

The fund was first established in 2020 to provide investment in Ireland’s archaeological heritage. It invests in archaeological heritage and helps owners and custodians of archaeological monuments to safeguard them into the future for the benefit of communities and the public.

Commenting, the Minister said “Our archaeological heritage is Donegal is a huge and important part of our country, both in the fabric of who we are as Donegal people and as important markers of our history. It is great that almost €400k will go towards the upkeep of seven such projects in Donegal this year. Thanks to all of those involved in keeping this projects going.”

Funding is prioritised for local authorities, private owners and custodians and community groups for the care, conservation, maintenance, protection and promotion of archaeological monuments. Total funding available nationally for projects under Community Monuments Fund 2023 is €6,000,000.

The Fund has 3 Streams:

Stream 1 offers up to €100,000 aimed at essential repairs and capital works for the conservation and repair of archaeological monuments.

Stream 2 offers up to €30,000 for development of Conservation Management Plans/Reports that are aimed at identifying measures for conservation of archaeological monuments and improving public access.

Stream 3 offers up to €30,000 for enhancement of access infrastructure and interpretation (including virtual/online) at archaeological monuments.
