Donegal aiming for semi-final spot

DONEGAL will top their McKenna Cup section and qualify for the semi-finals of the pre-season competition if they win or draw against Cavan in MacCumhaill Park on Wednesday night.

Declan Bonner’s team made it two wins from two games with a comfortable 1-17 to 0-10 triumph against Down in Newry on Sunday.

However, the win did come at a cost as Eoin McHugh picked up a hamstring injury.

It was Donegal’s second ten-point victory in successive weeks, and on score difference, leaves them ahead of Cavan, who have also won twice.

Even a narrow defeat could see Donegal progress to the last four as the best runners-up, but Bonner and his team will be targeting victory against the Breffni men.

“We want to do it,” said Bonner.

“It’s in MacCumhaill Park, and we’ll see how the bodies are because we are on small numbers at the minute.

“We will see now as we move into Wednesday night. We want to win so we will just go out and play.

“Cavan have two wins so it should be a decent match.”

Cavan are under the guidance of Mickey Graham this year, and they defeated Queen’s University by 0-17 to 0-3 on Sunday, but only had a point to spare over Down the previous week.

Bonner has been dealt a blow ahead of Wednesday’s match as Eoin McHugh picked up a hamstring injury in the second half against Down.

The Kilcar man, who has recently returned to Donegal colours after a year out, was sprinting forward to support an attack when he fell to the ground in pain.

McHugh now faces a spell on the sidelines and is likely to miss the early stages of the National League.

“The biggest concern is Eoin McHugh. I haven’t been in the dressing room yet but it looks like he’s torn his hamstring.

“He will be out for the early league games if it’s as bad as it looks.

“It’s a huge, huge blow, and the boys Cathal (Ellis) and Kevin (Moran) will work hard to rehab him and get him back, but it will probably be the league now.”

Meanwhile, Ryan McHugh has indicated that he will make his return to competitive action when Ulster University take on Derry in the McKenna Cup on Wednesday night.
