A former boxer in Buncrana in his own youth, Andy retained an interest and he was a popular figure at ringside in his role as a judge.

“He was well known everywhere and traveled a lot of miles for boxing,” Illies Golden Gloves coach Eamonn Duffy said.

“He’ll be sadly missed by every in the club and in the boxing community. We send the condolences of everyone in the club to the McLaughlin family.”

His son, William, is a former Irish senior welterweight champion.

Duffy said: “Me and Andy went to the Worlds in Milan and were at the European Championships in Liverpool. We also had a couple of club trips to Boston and Andy went away to watch William box in the World Series of Boxing.”

Andy McLaughlin will be buried following Requiem Mass at 11am this morning at St Mary’s Church, Cockhill.
