A Letterkenny councillor says he is unsure whether plans to reduce the speed limit on the Four Lane Road are workable.
A public consultation is ongoing into proposals to drop the maximum permitted speed from 100kph to 60kph.
At the moment, with work ongoing, the speed limit is 50kph. Construction on the new road layout is scheduled to be completed in late November.
A spokesperson for Donegal County Council said, “It is proposed to adopt a speed limit of 60kph between the Dry Arch Roundabout and the Cullion Road junction.
“The new limits will come into effect on completion of the scheme and will be subject to the necessary statutory processes to amend the by-laws and subject to full consultation and adoption by Donegal County Council.
“The proposed changes will be more appropriate for the reduced road cross section of the newly constructed scheme.
“They will meet current standards and policies and are appropriate for this road section and in line with the objectives of this scheme.”
Submissions to the consultation process must be received by Donegal County Council by September 8.
Councillor Gerry McMonagle says the speed limit reduction may not be workable.
Sinn Féin’s Gerry McMonagle said it was important that people made their views known on the proposals.
“My concern is the volume of traffic going out of Letterkenny and whether this will enable vehicles to move quick enough so as not to cause snarl ups in the town,” Councillor McMonagle said.
“At the moment the limit is down to 50kph and that has been very hard to police.
“A limit of 60kph is still very slow on what will be a good road and my worry would be the same, how it is policed.
“I’m not just convinced 60kph will be practical and that is why this consultation is so important.
“It is for people who use the roads to have their say and to offer their views.
“We want the road to be safe but is 60kph the right speed for it?
“I would encourage as many people as possible to have their say.”
