VINTNERS from across Ireland will gather in Ballybofey next week for their annual conference – and topping the agenda will be the future of rural pubs and how those in the trade are having to deal with changes in people’s attitudes to socialising.
President of the Vintners’ Federation of Ireland (VFI) John Clendennen said there are many challenges and opportunities facing their members as they continue to emerge from lockdown. Many may have to diversify to ensure their pubs are there for the future.
Despite the rise in operating costs for pub owners, the VFI President is optimistic for their 3,500 members and the place of the pub in Irish society.
Speaking to the Donegal News, Mr Clendennen said he understands the issues facing the rural pub owner as his own pub is located in rural County Offaly.
“There is a perception out there among some, that people do not go to the pub any more but that is not the case,” he said.
“Our figures show that the pub is still a popular meeting place but behaviour has changed. Members report people going to and from the pub earlier and many pubs now have a food offering.
“It was not until during the pandemic when we could not go to the pub that people only realised how much they missed it when it was no longer possible.
