Community rallies after lightning strike in Newtown

By Diarmaid Doherty

The newly formed committee elected to oversee a fundraising campaign for the families impacted by last week’s lightning strike in Newtowncunningham met for the first time on Sunday.

It follows a public meeting held in the town on Friday night which attracted an attendance of around 160 people.

The campaign organiser, Cllr Paul Canning, said the big turn-out showed the great community spirit that’s in Newtowncunningham and the surrounding area.

“We had no problem electing a committee, which just shows how keen everyone is to help out the three families that were affected by the lightning striks,” he told the Donegal News.

“The committee met today and by next weekend, hopefully we’ll have a much better idea of the different events that will be organised locally to raise some funds.”

Three houses were badly damaged when a bolt of lightning struck on Monday afternoon. Fortunately nobody was injured in the incident, but severe  damage was caused.
