Calls to widen busy Gaoth Dobhair road

LOCALS are calling for one of the busiest roads in Gaoth Dobhair to be widened ahead of the summer season.

In recent years Donegal County Council had resurfaced and widened the sides of part of the Magheragallon road from the GAA Pitch up towards Middletown.

But locals are now calling to finish the other part of the road up to Paddy Sweeney’s house.

This part of the road is so narrow that it’s extremely difficult for two cars to pass on it.

There is also an issue with water on the sides of the road which needs to be addressed.

This is one of the busiest roads in the parish which leads to so many amenities including the two GAA football pitches and clubhouse, Gweedore Celtic football pitch, Gaoth Dobhair Golf Club and golf links.

The Magheragallon pier is also very busy especially during the summer months with visitors and locals making the short boat trip to Gola Island. Other amenities taking part in the vicinity of the pier include kayaking, swimming and summer camps for the kids.

The road is also used by funeral cortege to Magheragallon cemetery, and also used by fishermen and thousands of visitors who flock to the sea during the summer. It is also used by Ukrainian families living in the hostel in this area.
