BURGLARIES in Donegal Garda Division dropped by 10 per cent over the last 12 months.
That’s according to latest CSO data collated by PhoneWatch.
There were 9,117 burglary incidents nationally during the same period.
According to An Garda Síochána reports for national incidents, 26 per cent of burglars enter homes through the back door, 24 per cent via back windows and eight per cent through front windows. One in five cases involved a burglar gaining access through an unsecured door or window.
The downward trend over the last 12 months was seen in 21 of the 28 Gardaí divisions which experienced a decrease in burglaries.
The divisions with the highest rate of decreases in burglaries are Dublin Eastern Gardaí division at -26 per cent, Wicklow at -23 per cent, Cork West at -22 per cent and Dublin Southern Gardaí division at -21 per cent.
Seven Gardaí divisions have had an increase in burglaries, four of these divisions are in the West of Ireland, with Clare reporting the highest increase of 23 per cent (197 burglaries), followed closely by Mayo with a 22 per cent increase (169 burglaries), Sligo and Leitrim division had a 17 per cent increase (151 burglaries combined) and Galway 1 per cent (385 burglaries). While Louth, Wexford and Dublin North Central all increased by eight per cent.
Since the start of 2022, there have been over 16,300 burglaries.
Eoin Dunne, PhoneWatch Managing Director said there was more work to do in reducing the number of burglaries.
