Bundoran Library turns green for St Patrick’s Day.
A GROUP of visiting students from the Athenian School in Danville, California will be among the participants in the annual Bundoran St Patrick’s Day Parade this Sunday at 3.30pm.
The group, made up of students 14-16 years old, are studying the history, literature and culture of Ireland as part of the Interim program of the School.
They will visit many historical and cultural sites on either side of the border, and their base for the trip will be the Donegal Adventure Centre in Bundoran – part of the Institute of Study Abroad Ireland, an initiative to develop educational tourism in the North-West of Ireland.
Niamh Hamill is the director of the Institute and is continuing to promote Donegal as an ideal location for visiting students. Niamh says “Donegal has everything that our visitors could want.
“Our students love activities like surfing and hiking, they are pleasantly surprised by the vibrant youth culture and superb music scene. They like that it is English and Irish-speaking, and that everyone is so welcoming.”
Bundoran Parade director John O’Connell said: “The parade attracts visitors from all corners every year and we look forward to welcoming our friends from California this year to take part.
“The parade itself will be a spectacular show of colour with street performers, local business and community floats, cartoon characters and more and kicks off at the East End at 3.30pm’.
“He added that Bundoran is in full swing with lots to do across the holiday weekend ‘there’s fun for all the family right across town with Globowl, Dizzy’s Den, 6 screen Eclipse Cinema and Bundoran Adventure Park all open for business while the renowned Roguey Walk offers stunning views of the area and Donegal Bay.”
Fresh from their Irish premiere and promotional tour of Ireland, the stars of the new Hardy Bucks movie will make an appearance on Saturday night in Aqua Nightclub while on Friday night patrons of the old Peppies Nightclub on Main Street will reunite in the Kicking Donkey raising funds for the RNLI and Cystic Fibrosis.
Jimmy Buckley, Derek Ryan and Mike Denver will all take to the stage in the Allingham Arms across the weekend also. There’s live music in pubs across town too.
Following the recent worldwide tradition of “global greening” for St Patrick’s Day whereby famous landmarks across the globe like the Sydney Opera House, the Christ The Redeemer statue in Rio and the Empire State Building in New York are turned green on March 17th, the civic offices in the town and also the iconic “Rock of the Birds” monument by local sculptor Brendan McGloin which overlooks the Peak surf break will also turn green for the week.
