Bins ‘overflowing’ at Rathmullan beach

A REVIEW of how litter generated at the car park at Rathmullan beach is managed is to be undertaken by Donegal County Council after officials were told the bins at the location are ‘not fit for purpose’.

Cllr Pauric McGarvey raised the issue at a Council meeting this week when he said the bins are unable to cope with the amount of rubbish.

“There are many good volunteer groups in the town but because the current bins are not fit for purpose there is more litter on the ground than in the bins,” he said.

Cllr Liam Blaney seconding the motion described it as “timely”.

“We need closed bins. Some of the companies the litter comes from might also provide bins,” he added.

Cllr John O’Donnell explained how Downings Tidy Towns had a skip in a nearby yard they could empty bins into at busy times.

“We cannot expect our own staff to be there all the time. Look for a place to hold spill-over,” he said.

Senior Engineering Executive David McIlwaine told the meeting that the bins in Rathmullan were emptied up to three times a day at busy times.

“The roads section in conjunction with the environment section will carry out a review of a method of managing the waste and litter generated by casual trading outlets that operate in the area during the summer,” he stated.
