SIGNIFICANT progress is being reported by Uisce Éireann regarding a €31 million project to upgrade wastewater infrastructure in Buncrana, and in Ballybofey-Stranorlar.
The upgraded sewerage schemes aim to improve water quality in Lough Swilly and the River Finn by eliminating stormwater overflows, safeguarding the environment, and supporting social and economic development.
The project is now reaching the midway point with considerable progress being made, including 7.5 kilometres of pipeline already constructed across key locations in Buncrana.
“This work will not only reduce the risk of sewer flooding and address non-compliant sewer overflows into Lough Swilly and the River Finn, but it will support future social and economic growth in the area,” said Colm Claffey of Uisce Éireann.
“We understand that this type of work is disruptive to the local community, and we want to thank them for their patience while we work to deliver this essential project as quickly and safely as possible,” added Mr Claffey.
Due to challenging ground conditions along Cockhill Road in Buncrana, open trench pipelaying techniques are being used and two crews have been deployed to ensure the works are completed as quickly and as safely as possible.
To date, over two kilometres of pipeline have been upgraded across the town and works are planned to commence this summer to upgrade both St Joseph’s and Glenfinn Road Pumping Stations.
