MARINA Hamilton is a painter and sculptor from St Johnston. Her studies took her from Raphoe Vocational School to North West Institute For further and Higher education where she completed a National Diploma in General Art and Design.
Marina then continued her studies in the University at Belfast where she graduated in 1996 with a BA (HONS) in Fine Craft Design (Ceramics).
Marina has been working as a full-time artist since and describes herself as a painter and sculptor, she paints with a range of different mediums including pencil, pastel, water-colour and oils. In her sculptures she works with bronze and ceramics.
All of Marina’s ceramic pieces are hand built and are once off individual pieces. The artist’s work has been influenced from her upbringing on a farm and she says she has always had a close affinity to animals, she get inspiration from their character, personality and psyche.
While Marina was doing her degree she was commissioned to make awards for a big three day international event and her entire degree show was a sell-out show, she used her initiative and this money helped her to buy a kiln so she could continue creating her beautiful sculptures.
Marina said she loves the life that being an artist gives her, art and making it is her passion, she is her own boss and she can juggle her life and work balance, with children, family and horses.
Marina has a studio/gallery at her home in Maymore, St Johnston. In Donegal you can see her work in An Clachan in Gweedore. But mostly she sells her work in Dublin in the RDS, The Dublin Horse Show, Artsource and the National Craft fair.
Marina feels she has been very lucky over the years with commissions like making work for the likes of President Mary McAleese.
She has also made the awards for Horse Racing Ireland for ten years and some of these went to the Sheikhs and Princess Hiya of Jordan.
Marina has also made awards that went to Hong Kong to the champion race horse ‘Sea
The Stars’ and other well known race horses, jockeys and trainers.
Marina said that she wants to continue to make art until she is old and still able to hold a paint brush and we look forward to seeing her beautiful work blossom throughout the years.
