A Peggy Mulqueen necklace.
PEGGY Mulqueen is an independent jewellery label offering textile accessories, necklaces, cuffs and brooches. The creator and designer of this bespoke label is textile artist Maggie Roarty from Letterkenny.
Her passion for precise detailing and colour feature strongly in her work. Finely crafted pieces are created using carefully sourced fabrics, very often vintage using vintage materials.
This stylish fashion forward label with its innovative approach to creating contemporary and bespoke pieces appeals to both young and mature clients.
Offering the young client to express their individuality whilst the mature client can embrace current trends with an air of sophistication.
I first came across Maggie Roarty’s beautiful and unique necklaces when I was given her stunning blue triangular piece as a Christmas present by my aunt.
I have always loved fashion and jewellery and I am always on the look out for unique and quirky pieces. I think a statement piece or interesting necklace can make an outfit. What I love about Maggie’s necklaces are that they are one of a kind, limited edition pieces ranging from three to ten in any one colour arrangement.
The name Peggy Mulqueen was her mother’s maiden name. Like Maggie, her mother had a flair for fashion and loved to sew and some of Maggie’s fondest memories of her sitting at her sewing table with her mother.
She would often sit at the table with her mother, fiddling with some sewing tools or rummaging through her button collection.
Maggie would often create Dior-esque ball gowns for her dolls! Her mother was and still remains a huge inspiration to her in her work.
She said her thoughts would often turn to her during the design process, wondering how she would tackle a particular deign she was working on.
Maggie has always been a lover of fashion and she keeps a close eye on catwalk and colour trends. She also has a tumblr blog where she catalogues her inspirations, mainly in fashion and photography. In her work, Maggie uses a lot of vintage fabrics, particularly neckties, as the smaller patterns on the fabrics lend themselves quite well to her pieces. Due to the nature of the fabric, Maggie uses most of her pieces are in limited edition.
Maggie completed an honours degree in heritage studies in 2006. This knowledge base along with her experience in a variety of roles within the cultural sector remains as a guide and inspiration as she takes her place within the new wave of creative enterprises in Ireland.
