Maura McGlynn scooped the prize of overall winner of the Derek Hill Foundation prize.
THE opening night of The Glebe Art Gallery Annual Easter Exhibition took place on Friday, 3rd April, with art lovers from all over Ireland flocking to Gartan to get a glimpse of the wide range of talent on display.
It is a massive achievement in itself to be chosen from the hundreds of entries to take part in this magnificent exhibition.
Every year the judges have the difficult task of choosing prize winners from the exhibition and also the overall winner of the prestigious Derek Hill Foundation Prize.
There were five Glebe Gallery prize winners this year who I would like to extend my congratulations to: Daniel Nelis for ‘Room with a Window’, Cathal McGinley for ‘Bridge End, Ramelton’, Ian Gordon for Ramelton End of Summer 2014, Aideen Connolly for ‘Atlantic Edge and Patricia Conlin for ‘Magpie’.
But there can only be one overall winner! This year local artist Maura McGlynn scooped the prize of overall winner of the Derek Hill Foundation prize for her work ‘Gola II’.
Maura said : “I am a professional artist based in Churchill but originally from Galway. I have been painting for the last 25-30 years.
“I studied under Melita Denaro and Chris Wilson formally of the Glebe Gallery. In the winter months I do life drawing in An Gailearaí in Falcarragh.
“I paint outdoors and finish my work in my studio. I like to paint the sea, especially in a storm when the seas are rough.
“Colour is very important in my work, I love the dark moody colours of the sky and sea in Donegal. I go out to Gola, Tory and Inishbofin island to paint.
“I have always worked primarily with oil paint but during the last year I have moved into mono type and etching through a course which I attended in Cló Ceardlann in Mín an Leá, Gortahork. “Cló is an art and media workshop which facilitates artists and groups to create original works which can be used for exhibition.
“I attend Cló once a week and use their facilities and this is where I created my mono type work entitled Gola Island 2 which won the Derek Hill Foundation Prize on Friday night at the Glebe Gallery. I created this mono type from drawings and colour studies that I had done on a trip to Gola Island.
“My work has previously been accepted at the Royal Hibernian Academy and the Royal Ulster Academy. I am very honoured and thrilled to have won the Derek Hill Foundation prize at the Glebe Art Gallery last night.”
