Air support and extra garda resources ready for rally weekend

By Emma Ryan

A SIGNIFICANT policing plan including air support and additional garda resources are being rolled out in preparation for the weekend as thousands descend on the county for the 51st Donegal International Rally.

Gardaí will be out in force this rally weekend applying a zero tolerance approach in relation to dangerous driving, drink and drug driving and bad driver behaviour in general.

A significant policing plan has been prepared and local resources are being augmented by resources from the North Western Region and National Units – including air support – to implement the increased policing plan.

Traffic management plans are also being implemented for the duration of the event to assist traffic flow and access for emergency vehicles as required.

Ongoing liaison with local authorities and the Road Safety Authority, in addition to other stakeholders, is taking place with regards to additional assistance being provided
in the run up to, and during the event.

Ahead of the weekend, a garda spokesperson said, “The public are asked to comply with all traffic diversions in place and any directions given by An Garda Síochána.

“When attending stages please adhere to the directions of the stage stewards.

“Only park in designated areas and use park and ride facilities where available.

“A significant influx of people is expected for the weekend – anyone travelling in the area is advised to allow additional journey time due to possible delays.

“In particular, road users are urged to comply with all road traffic legislation, remembering the four key lifesaver offences – Drive within the speed limits – Never drive under the influence of drink or drugs – Wear a seat belt – Don’t use a mobile phone while driving and be considerate to other road users and local residents.”

Unfortunately, every year the rally attracts a small number of people whose behaviour also leaves a lot to be desired as they drive in a dangerous manner.

Gardaí are warning that any sort of disruptive or antisocial behaviour will not be tolerated.

“It is highly unfair to the people of the local communities who should not have to endure any sort of unnecessary disruption or misery as a result of the poor decisions of but a few.

“The rally brings so many positives to the county each year and we want to emphasise that it is only a small minority of the large crowd who attend each year who end up getting in bother because of their poor behaviour on and off the roads over the course of the weekend.”

Meanwhile, the Donegal Road Safety Working Group issued a road safety appeal to everyone attending the Donegal International Rally.

Chris Harley, Road Safety Officer, Donegal County Council said, “We appeal to all rally fans to be cautious, use the road responsibly and be courteous to all road users.

“The gardaí will be out in force this weekend and we support them in taking a zero tolerance with anyone showing disregard for the rules of the road.

“It falls on every one of us to ensure our roads are safe for all road users.

“Please keep the race in its place,” said Mr Harley.
