Abbey VS student Beibhinn wins national short film competition

A STUDENT from Abbey Vocational School in Donegal Town has been declared the winner of the Gathering Ireland Short Film Competition for Transition Year Students.

Beibhinn Naughton beat off stiff competition from three other schools from around Ireland to win €1,000 and €400 for her school at the National Final which was held on Thursday, March 21, in The House of Lords, College Green in Dublin City.

Beibhinn’s film, ‘Hearts Like Mountains’, showcased what Donegal can offer visitors of Gatherings with a little help from local celebrities Noel Cunningham, Guest Relations Manager at Harvey’s Point Hotel; Mickey Joe Harte, Musician; both Donegal Gathering Ambassadors Karl Lacey, Donegal footballer and Brian Ormond, TV Presenter.

Guest judge Aoibhínn Ní Shúilleabháin congratulated all of the contestants saying: “The talent and creativity shown by the students is amazing. They should all be very proud of themselves and their communities should be proud of how they’ve put their hometowns on the map. Visitors to Gatherings throughout Ireland this year are in for some great local treats if these videos are anything to go by!”

The four finalists’ Short Films had been posted to BOI YouTube where members of the public were invited to vote for their favourite.

‘Hearts Like Mountains’ film received over 700 public votes and was declared the overall winner by a judging panel made up of representatives of the Gathering Ireland 2013, the Department of Education and Skills; the Bank of Ireland and guest judge Aoibhínn Ní Shúilleabháin.

The competition which received over 100 entries was launched in January 2013 to encourage Transition Year Students to be part of the Gathering Ireland 2013 by showcasing all that they love about their hometown through the medium of film.
