YOUNG people across Donegal are being urged to join Binky and Zoink as the popular Summer Stars Reading Adventure returns to public libraries.
Open to all children, Summer Stars is a free programme.
Cathaoirleach Cllr Gerry McMonagle said it was a great opportunity for parents to bring their children along to their local library.
“We have local libraries right around the county and the Summer Reading Stars Programme is a great free way to keep your children occupied during the summer months and keep their reading skills intact during the holidays.”
Each child who registers for the programme at their local library joins in the fun of reading lots of exciting books during the summer. Children will receive their own Summer Stars Reading Card to record their progress and the Summer Stars Reward Stamp will be added to their card at the library for each book read. Fun rewards will be provided along the way. At the end of the programme, all children who have participated will be invited to attend an awards event.
Donna Cavanagh, Senior Librarian with Donegal County Council, said she believed the programme was a great way to make sure that there was no dip in a child’s reading over the summer months.
“The summer reading programme is really beneficial to children as it keeps their brain active over the summer months and sparks a creative and imaginative flare that they wouldn’t have if they didn’t read,” says Donna.
“We have been running summer reading programmes for over 15 years and we are delighted to see this programme being rolled out at a national level under the Summer Reading Stars brand.”
