lenswilly had a bright start to their Division 1 campaign against MacCumhaills and captain on Tuesday night Jack Gallagher feels they are building well with a young squad.
Eight of the starters for Glenswilly and a further three subs featured in the Under 21 ‘A’ final where they were beaten narrowly by Four Masters last December, while Gallagher along with Sean Collum and Kealan Dunleavy were on the runnerup team the previous year.
It was a first senior start in the league for Pauric Devine, Liam McGinley, Shane Tinney and Mark Collum, while Cillian Bonner came off the bench for his first appearance and the young guns impressed for Gary McDaid’s side.
“We had five league debutants and there are a lot of good young players coming through so we’re happy.
“It’s great for those young boys to get in there and it gave us great fresh legs.
“We’re trying to get as many of them young boys playing as we can and keep building and we’ll see what happens.
“It’s looking like a young team for the foreseeable but that’s what it’s about, if we keep together hopefully we can stick at it.”
Glenswilly had a delayed start to their campaign with a free week on the opening weekend, while Tuesday’s game was put back from the weekend due to the county team playing Derry in MacCumhaill Park in the Ulster championship but Gallagher is happy with their fast start.
“We didn’t know what way the game was going to go, with the new rules we’re still getting used to those tweaks and there was a few silly mistakes from both teams but we’re delighted to get a good result there.
“It can be taxing enough but so far, so good. Sometimes last year you could be up against 14 men and there would be no space in front of you but this year there seems to be a wee bit of room.
“We got one or two big turnovers and a couple of two pointers then the goal, we got well ahead but we let ourselves slip and at half-time there wasn’t much in it.
“But we came out hard in the second half and thankfully we got a couple of points and goals and got over the line.”
Glenswilly host Naomh Conaill this Sunday and after defeat to Termon, Martin Regan’s side will be looking to bounce back but Glenswilly will smell blood against their neighbours.
“Glenties on Sunday which will not be easy then we have Gaoth Dobhair and Kilcar after that, it’s a few tight games but we’ll see what happens. They’ll probably all be short a lot of regulars too so we’ll go at it full tilt.
“It’s early but it is a wide open looking league at the minute and it’s hard to know what way games are going to go but we’ll prepare for Glenties and see what happens.”
