THE Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is assisting the family of a young Donegal man who has been languishing in a South American jail for more than a year.
The man, who we have decided not to name, is serving a four-and-a-half year sentence for a drug trafficking related offence in French Guiana, which borders the North Atlantic Ocean, between Brazil and Suriname.
When contacted this week, a DFA spokesperson said it does not comment on individual cases.
However, The Donegal News understands the family of the man, who is in his early twenties, is in regular contact with the department.
He is said to have been known to Gardai locally in relation to minor drug use.
