THE chairman of the Donegal Parents and Friends of People with Learning Disabilities has welcomed the announced of a €1.1 million grant for a purpose built sheltered housing complex in Dungloe.
Mr Seamus Rodgers was speaking after the Junior Minister for Housing and Planning, Jan O’Sullivan, announced a capital investment totalling over €46m for a range of housing projects around the country.
The funding will go towards the provision of accommodation for people with special housing needs including the elderly, persons with an intellectual or physical disability and homeless persons.
The Donegal organisation was formed 51 years ago to address the concerns of parents as to what might happen to their children after they are gone.
They hope to start work later this year on two six-bedroom units in Dungloe, similar to the execllent Ard Greine Court complex in Stranorlar.
Mr Rodgers said they had been campaigning for adequate funding for the proposed Dungloe facility for a number of years. Currently, rented properties around the Dungloe area are used to accommodate their needs.
“Fortunately, through good offices of Dublin TD Michael Conaghan, who is originally from Donegal, it was arranged for a deputation from Donegal to meet with Minister O’Sullivan earlier this year,” Ms Rodgers said.
“I would like to the thank the Minister and her officials as well as Donegal County Council and my colleagues on the committee of the Donegal Parents and Friends of People with Learning Disabilities.
“This news comes as a great relief to the parents and people involved with the association as well as the nursing staff at The Angle day care centre in Dungloe.”
