STRUCTURAL works are to begin on the Arbatt Bridge in Cloghan this July following a year-long closure.
The bridge, situated on a secondary link road, had to be immediately closed last February due to a partial bridge collapse.
Donegal County Council successfully secured €70,000 from the Department of Transport for the repair of the bridge under the regional road bridge rehabilitation programme.
A stage one appropriate assessment has now been completed and determined the repair works would not adversely affect the River Finn.
Speaking to the Donegal News, Cllr Patrick McGowan said tender documents have now been prepared and are expected to be on eTenders in the coming week.
Cllr McGowan also confirmed a contractor is expected to be on site in July to begin work.
“While we would all love to get a lovely new bridge, the community very much need to get their bridge back,” he said.
“We are focusing on the here and now instead of promises in the future.
“I am absolutely delighted because I have been doing quite a bit of lobbying and meeting with the residents.
“It is always good to have a bit of good news.”
Donegal County Council is also working hard to resurface the Ardlaghan to Glenswilly road this week which is situated close to the bridge.
