WORK on the development of an additional two pitches at the Donegal GAA Training Centre in Convoy got underway on Monday.

The development of the third and fourth pitches at the venue comes at a time when the exisiting two pitches at the venue are in full use.

Curran Contracts from County Armagh, who completed the work on the first two pitches, are carrying out the work on the two new pitches, to run adjacent to the main Convoy-Stranorlar road.

“It is good to see the work starting on the two extra pitches because they’re badly needed – there is a lot of volume on the other two pitches,” Development Officer Michael McMenamin told Monday night’s county committee meeting in Ballybofey.

It is estimated that the development of the third and fourth pitches will cost €256,000.

Last month, the floodlights on the first two pitches were switched on and the erection of dressing rooms is also close to the top of the priority list.

The installation of the €345,000 lighting system, manufactured by the American-based Musco Lighting and installed by McSherry’s of Cork, was a significant move and now work on two new pitches outlines the determination of county officers to see the project through.

A spectator stand on one of the existing pitches has also been included in the plans.

In 2008 the County Board of the time purchased a 26-acre site, at a cost of €1.393 million. Late in 2012, a €300,000 grant was sanctioned to Donegal from the Sports Capital programme.
