WORK has commenced to restore the mural at the front of McGeady’s Pub in Dunlewey.
The mural depicting Darby O’Gill was painted back in 1995, by a group of three artists known as the Derry Artists.
It was commissioned by the pub’s landlord, Michael McGeady.
The mural has since become synonymous with the small town at the foot of Errigal.
But in recent years it has become weather-beaten and worn.
Fran O’Boyle is a well-known muralist with many stunning murals scattered across the Gaoth Dobhair parish.
One evening when Fran was visiting his local for a pint, Michael McGeady asked him if he could help restore the original artists’ work.
Fran was delighted to be asked to restore what he described as an iconic piece of artwork.
He picked up his paintbrushes earlier this week and began working on the restoration.
He assured locals that the original artwork won’t be changed, just refreshed.
The restoration will continue in the coming days, weather permitting, Fran explained.
