A local councillor has described as the ‘lowest of the low’ a sickening robbery and attack on an 80-year-old woman in the Letterkenny area.
Gardai have launched a manhunt after the woman was robbed and beaten in her home in the Glencar area of the town in the early hours of Saturday morning.
The incident happened at around 5.20am. The woman received minor injuries and was released from Letterkenny General Hospital but is said to be traumatised and badly shaken.
A lone male broke into her home and stole a sum of cash and jewellery.
The Mayor of Letterkenny, Councillor Paschal Blake, said he was ‘horrified and disgusted’ to hear of the incident.
“This behaviour is getting out of hand in this area. It is only recently I spoke of two break-ins at Wolfe Tone place. Naturally, this elderly lady is shocked and devastated and had to be hospitalised.
“I’m concerned for older people who may be living alone and in fear of somebody entering their house. It is not a nice community to live in if elderly people are living in fear. It is also the trauma for the person that leaves a big devastation.
Local Councillor Jimmy Kavanagh, who lives close to the home of the woman, said he was ‘disgusted’ by the attack.
“The person or persons behind this are the lowest of the low,” he said.
“I’m disgusted to hear of this horrific incident on an old woman in her own home,” he said.
