Celebrate your local ‘Heritage Hero’ and nominate an unsung hero in your community
The public is invited to nominate their ‘Heritage Hero’ for the prestigious Heritage Hero award.
This award is part of the National Heritage Week Awards, which celebrate outstanding heritage projects and events across the country.
Nominations can be submitted via the short form on the Heritage Week website, and the deadline for submissions is Tuesday, September 24.
The Heritage Hero award recognises individuals or groups who have made significant contributions to safeguarding and celebrating local heritage.
These unsung heroes often work tirelessly behind the scenes, ensuring that the stories, traditions, and natural beauty of their communities are preserved for future generations.
If you know someone who fits this description, don’t miss the chance to give them the recognition they deserve.
National Heritage Week, which took place from August 17 to August 25, featured over 120 events and two digital projects in County Donegal alone.
The week is a vibrant celebration of Ireland’s rich cultural and natural heritage, drawing participants from all walks of life.
The National Heritage Awards ceremony, where the Heritage Hero and other award winners will be announced, is scheduled for November.
In addition to the Heritage Hero award, event organisers from Heritage Week can nominate their projects for several other categories, including the Connections, Routes & Networks Award, Wild Child Event Award, Water Heritage Day Award, Inclusive Heritage Award, Irish Language Award, Sustainability & Climate Award, Intangible Cultural Heritage Award, and County Award.
Last year, two projects from Donegal were recognised with National Heritage Week Awards.
Togra Fiontar and Cultúr Uladh received the Irish Language Event Award for their Feile Saibhreas na Síoraíochta, an event that encouraged participation in the Irish language.
The Inishowen Rivers Trust, in partnership with The Loughs Agency, won the Water Heritage Award for their Culdaff River Heritage Workshop. This project highlighted the importance of waterways in local heritage and explored how to conserve this vital natural resource for the future.
